A Japanese speech contest was held in conjunction with the Japanese Embassy in Jamaica and the University of the West Indies (UWI) on June 17th, 2023. The contest was sponsored by APIC with the cooperation of the Japan Foundation, JICA, and the Japanese Teacher’s Association in Jamaica. Around 60 people were in the audience that day, including Japanese Ambassador to Jamaica Mr. Yasuhiro Atsumi and Jamaican Minister of Education & Youth Ms. Fayval Williams.

The contest was split into two levels, with the ten participants showing off their Japanese skills on the following topics: Level 1 “My Favorite Things” and Level 2 “The Environment & Me”. At the end of the contest the results were announced, and the winners were given an award. As a prize, APIC sent Japanese books and other goods related to Japanese culture for the students to enjoy. They were apparently items that are hard to obtain in Jamaica, and the contestants appeared to be delighted to receive them.
