APIC-MCT Cooperation Project
Water Tanks Donated to Island of Wonei, Chuuk, FSM
Wonei is home to eight villages with a total of 838 residents; one 1,000-gallon water tank per village was purchased using APIC’s donation. Pipes connecting the water tanks to residents’ houses were installed, providing water to everyone.
Along with the rest of the Pacific region community, Wonei has suffered severe droughts throughout the past several years, affecting water available for daily use, as well as crops such as taro root, breadfruit, and coconuts. Up until the installation of the water tanks, Wonei was unprepared for long-lasting natural disasters, such as droughts. However, with the newly installed tanks the island is now able to store enough rain water to provide a stable supply in the case of droughts or other disasters.
APIC has worked with MCT in the past to donate money for purchasing and installing water tanks in Micronesia’s outer islands. APIC plans to continue to work with MCT in order to help address and solve environmental challenges that the Micronesia region is facing.
