Summer 2018 APIC Student Internship

Based on the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed between APIC, Sophia University, and Tsuda University, APIC accepted internship students as part of the working experience component of the internship course. The internship was from July 3rd to August 24th, 2018. The interns were split into two groups; the 1st session and 2nd session. One student from Sophia University and five students from Tsuda University interned at the APIC office.

Sophia University and Tsuda University students came together to participate in APIC’s internship this time around.

The internship program was conducted during Sophia and Tsuda Universities’ spring and summer school recess, with completion of pre and post lectures and assignments necessary in order to receive credit for the course.

During their internship at APIC, the interns were in charge of phone and visitor reception, inviting speakers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to APIC’s Lecture Meeting Regarding Global Issues and taking charge of the reception desk, and taking part in interview projects. These experiences gave the interns a chance to deepen their understanding of APIC’s operation; at the end of their internship they gave a presentation about what they learned and their experiences.

Most of the students were matriculating in international studies or diplomatic relations, having an interest in overseas relations and international cooperation. Most of the students already had knowledge and were familiar with international relations theories. It appeared that the students became aware that under the general term ‘international cooperation’ there are individuals who are completing small tasks daily to keep things moving.

Here is the general outline of the activities undertaken during the internship period:

1st Session:July 3rd to July 27th

◆MCT-APIC Interview with Exchange Students in Sophia University Graduate School of Environmental Studies

On July 6th, 2018 the interns interviewed Mr. Bradford Mori and Ms. Bertha Reyuw who are studying at Sophia University Graduate School under the cooperation agreement signed between APIC and the Micronesia Conservation Trust (MCT). The subject of the interview was MCT’s efforts in regards to environmental problems.

◆Final Presentation

On the last day, the interns gave a brief presentation about their time at APIC.

＜Thoughts on being an Intern＞(Japanese only)

私は大学の夏休みを活用して、1ヶ月間APICでインターンをさせて頂きました。将来必ず必要となる、社会でのマナーや礼儀を学ぶことができ非常に有意義な1ヶ月を過ごすことができました。この1ヶ月を通して一番感じたことは、人との繋がりの重要性です。私たちがAPICに来ることができているのも、高橋学長とAPICの関係があったからこそであると思うと人脈がいかに重要であるか理解することができました。また、この1ヶ月間APICの皆さんには大変お世話になりました。これからもこのインターンでの経験を生かし精進していきます。本当にありがとうございました。

津田塾大学学芸学部1年　古川真帆さん

APICでインターンをさせていただいたこの１ヶ月間、MCT留学生インタビューなど多くの経験を積み、自分の仕事に大きな責任を持つことや積極的にコミュニケーションをとることの重要性を日々の活動を通して学ばせていただきました。APICの職員の皆様が会議で活発な意見交換をなさっていたことが特に印象に残っています。また、外務省アジア大洋州局長　金杉憲治氏の講演会に参加させていただいたことも貴重な経験となりました。
今回のインターンでは国際協力の現実を知り、自分の足りない点・これから学ぶべき課題を明確にすることができたと思います。この経験を生かし、今後の深い学びへとつなげていきます。

津田塾大学学芸学部1年　良永うめかさん

今回のインターンシップは、国際協力に興味を持ちながらも漠然とした理解しか持つことが出来なかった私にとって、大変有意義なものとなりました。普段の業務では、仕事すべてにおいて、オフィス全体で情報の共有と十分な検討をすることが求められているというのが印象的でした。また、早朝講演会で金杉憲治氏のお話を傾聴した際には、国際情勢に対する多角的な分析が大変参考になりました。今後は、今回の経験を存分に活かしながら、より充実した学生生活となるよう励んでまいります。最後になりますが、このような機会を与えて下さったAPICの皆様、津田塾大学関係者の方々に心から感謝申し上げます。

◆Interview with University of West Indies alumni Dane Miller

The interns held an interview on August 3rd with Dane Miller, a graduate of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona, Jamaica and former APIC Student Invitation Program 2016 participant. Mr. Miller has been in Japan since April 2018 in order to pursue his graduate studies.

◆Interview with NID Top Advisor Mr. Komori

The interns held an interview with Japanese company NID’s Top Advisor, Mr. Komori on August 20th. In preparation for the interview, the interns researched Mr. Komori’s business background and other information for creating questions to ask during the interview, made the appointment, and after conducting the interview they wrote it up in article format to conclude their work.

◆Final Presentation

On the final day, the interns gave a short presentation of what they had learned during their internship at APIC. They talked about their changed impressions of what ‘international cooperation’ is, and their hopes for the future.

APICでインターンをさせて頂いた１か月間は私にとってとても充実した時間であり、多くのことを学ばせていただきました。私にとって特に大きな学びだったのは、国際協力の方法は一つではないということです。私が思い浮かべる「国際協力」とは発展途上国の人々に物資やサービスを提供することでしたが、APICの事業は私が想像していたものと全く異なるものでした。このことから、自分がいかに狭い視点から「国際協力」を捉えていたのか気づくことができました。APICでの様々な経験を通して自分の視野を少しでも広げられたのではないかと思います。インターンを通して得たことをこれからの学生生活に生かし、さらに自分の視野を広げていけるように精進していきたいと思います。APICの皆さん、素晴らしい経験をありがとうございました。

津田塾大学学芸学部1年　藤﨑優香さん

漠然と国際協力に関心がありましたが、なぜ自分が日本ではなく国際にこだわるのか、本当に自分のやりたいことは国際協力なのか、そんな疑問を少しずつ答えとして形にしていきたいと考え始めたインターンでした。以前は現地に足を運び、同じ境遇で生活を共にするからこそ本当の支援ができるのだと考えていましたが、実際の選択肢は想像以上に幅広く、自分の知識不足が自分の世界を狭めているのだと痛感させられました。
約一か月のAPICでの活動を通して、すべての業務に共通する「伝える」ことの大切さを体感しました。何か一つ成長した自分で帰ることができる、そんな新しく貴重な毎日でした。温かくご指導くださったAPICの皆様、そしてこのような機会を設けてくださった津田塾大学関係者の皆様に厚く感謝申し上げます。

上智大学総合グローバル学部3年　森内みのりさん

今回APICでインターンをさせて頂いた一カ月間を通して、「国際協力」に対する知見が深まっただけでなく、社会人としてのマナーや様々な場面において積極的にコミュニケーションをとることの重要性を実感しました。APICの学生招聘計画に参加した留学生をはじめ、夕食会に参加していた方々など、職員の皆さんが様々な社会的・文化的背景を持つ方たちとどのようにコミュニケーションを図っているのか身近で見させて頂き大変勉強になりました。また、インターンを通して経験を積むことの重要性も感じ、私も大学生としての自覚を持って学業に専念できることを感謝しつつ、様々な経験を通して多くのものを吸収していきたいと思います。最後に、貴重な学びの場を与えて下さったAPICの職員の皆様や上智大学の方々をはじめとする全ての方に心から感謝致します。
